Combat Crisis, Animal Haus, and Cop Problem Friday 10/8 in Phoenixville.

10 Questions: Animal Haus

In this edition of The Goon Squad, I debut a new segment. "10 Questions" is a series of interviews with some of notable acts from the region's DIY circuit. Ryan "Ziggy" Ziegler, bass player of Animal Haus, took the time to share his thoughts for the intial round of "10 Questions". Boasting some of the catchiest, singalong-worthy punk rock to come out of this area in recent memory, Animal Haus has exploded onto the scene like a bat out of hell, bringing the Hell Party to venues all over eastern PA with reckless abandon, and boasting one of the most well received demos of 2010. For some background music to complement your reading, download the demo here.

Goon Squad: What made you guys want to do a band like Animal Haus?

Ryan Ziegler: I feel like John came to me with the idea of doing this band back in 07 on tour with our old band. We were most likely listening to Cocksparrer or Murphy's Law drunk in the van.
GS: How do you think the most die hard fans of your previous project, Barricade, will receive the stylistic shift you guys have made with Animal Haus?

RZ: I understand the feelings you can get when you like a band and they throw a complete curve ball at you. But its not like we kept the same name and dropped a country album. Or completely sold out and started a pig squeal mosh metal band to appeal to the mall crowd. I would hope people enjoy the music were making and respect the fact we still hold strong to underground roots and DIY ethics.

GS: Hypothetical situation. You were just offered a million dollars to book your own world tour. The only stipulation is you have to take three bands or artists with you, any genre: One band/artist from back in the day, a current favorite, and a local band from your neck of the woods. Who would you take with you and why?

Mia Zapata of The Gits
RZ: The Gits with Mia Zapata on Vocals. They are a huge inspiration to [John] Barlow (Vocals) and he really regrets never getting to see them before they broke up and Mia Zapata died.

Rancid- Not really a current band but they still tour and put out records so I'm going with them. They are one of the only bands I can honestly say I've listened to consistently for years and it would be an honor to share the stage with them.

And for a local, Stoked On Being Pumped, the newest SEPA band. Just because we hang out all the time already so we mind as well take it on the road.

GS: Speaking of locals, what are your thoughts on the state of the local DIY scene in your part of PA?

RZ: As far as the SEPA scene is concerned Ive seen it be better and hell of a lot worse. Were sort of at a crossroads currently. I'm excited to see how the next year or so plays out. I think the scene just got so big for a while we were almost destined to decline. But now that the herd is gonna thin only the best should remain and that could be some really exciting times.

GS: Out of the last string of shows you guys have played, has there been one that has stuck out in your mind the most from a music fan perspective?

John and Brian Barlow of Animal Haus at the Paul D Benefit.
RZ: August 28th we played the annual Paul D benefit up in Nanticoke with some of the best bands in PA, Wisdom In Chains, Strength for A Reason, Title Fight, just to name some of the bill. While it was def the worst set we have played as a band to date (booze might have been a factor). The show itself was top notch. Reminded me of the old days, from start to finish there was a great vibe and kids went off from the first band to last.

GS: Do you have any advice for young up and coming bands?

RZ: Honestly the best thing young bands can do is take their time. So many people decide they wanna do a band and rush to get it together, then rush to play shows and generally fade away faster than they came. Get a band together with the right people, write the best songs you can. Spend a couple bucks and record a decent demo, whats the point of playing a show if you can't leave anything for the crowd to remember you by.

GS: Off topic but almost more important: Phillies post-season predictions:

RZ: To be honest this year has been the least I've followed the Phils since 03. Honestly now that they are good I don't enjoy going to the over crowded games anymore. And it seems like since I don't go to games anymore I don't follow as much. This year I've actually gone to a shit load of reading Phillies games and enjoy them much more. I do hope the Phils make it again though cause no matter what I was raised to have Philly sports love.

GS: Now that 2010 is drawing to a close, whats in store for Animal Haus in 2011?

RZ: We are almost done writing our full length record which we will be recording this November at I Hava Studio where we did the demo. Get This Right records will be putting out a CD and 12inch of the new record.

GS: Where on the Internet can people find more info on Animal Haus?

RZ: We have a MySpace and a Facebook but honestly we point most people to www.stereokiller.com.animalhaus, we keep that pretty up to date and gets exclusive tracks whenever we record.

All Else Failed

GS: One last question: Favorite All Else Failed song.

RZ: Route 1 don't care what you say that is one of the most emotionally powerful songs ever written.
